The box is rectangular.
The sides are finely guilloché with straight and wavy parallel streaks forming a pattern of squares. This guillochage is covered with a translucent enamel in which the goldsmith has included a Japanese pattern, probably with gold leaf. This pattern consists of squares linked together by parallel lines.
The lid has the same enamel on guilloché silver with, in the center, a cartouche of the same motif in "negative". The squares and parallel lines are in blue enamel on a background of opaque yellow enamel.
The chamfered edges of the lid are enamelled black.
The inside of the box is lined with wood, the bottom is sheathed in leather (?).
The inside of the lid is vermeil. A remnant of a label, probably from the shop where it was sold, is still present in the lid.
The box is stamped:
. LK for goldsmith Louis Kuppenheim
. A crown in a rectangle, probably an export hallmark
. 935 for silver title
. Sterling for solid silver
. French import hallmark with Weevil
. Oval punch to identify
This box is a marvel! It is exceptional both for its dimensions, the finesse and complexity of the decoration and for the goldsmith who made it.
