"Work Skirt In Indigo Or Pastel Striped Cotton - Provence Late 18th Century"
Circa 1750-1800 Provence - France Rare popular work skirt in Indigo or Pastel blue striped Cotonine dating from the second half of the 18th century. Coming from a private Provençal collection, this flat skirt, woven with arms in one piece in 140 cm long, constitutes a preserved testimony of a rustic canvas woven at home, of which very little testimony reaches us. Cotonine, with a canvas warp and a weft of yarn, from which sails were sometimes made for the galleys and the King's vessels, particularly at the Bagne de Marseille (see page 153 of Michel Biehn's book, En Jupon Piqué et robe d' Indian, Jeanne Laffitte 1987). Lower braid in Nîmes blue cotton twill. slit in front. Flawless piece, clean and preserved over time. Excellent state of conservation. Dimensions: 102 cm high by 280 cm in circumference (140 cm flat).
