"Mosquito Mask - Sepik / Papua New Guinea"
Mosquito mask with a long straight and pointed shape, taking a long blade shape, unlike the hooked noses adorning other mosquito masks from this region. This kind of mask is also known as “Parak” or “Brag”. We know that this Parak spirit is often associated with initiation rites but also with hunting. Nicknamed the Nile of New Guinea, the Sepik River and the region around its mouth is considered one of the richest centers of Melanesian population and therefore of artisanal and artistic production. The right-angled face of the forehead reveals small slits as eyes. The forehead of the mask is covered with red and chestnut pigments; we will notice the residue of stripes on the lower part of the face of the mask giving it a certain charm.
