"Monkey Fetish - Baoulé / Ivory Coast"
Among the productions of the various African ethnic groups, Baoulé artefacts are particularly accessible to Western tastes due to the finesse of execution of their masks and statues. Thus, these monkey fetishes are particularly representative of the Baoulé vision of statuary. Often very refined, the polished surfaces as well as the many scarifications running through the Baoulé sculptures are characteristic of their aesthetics. Note the fine execution of the chest of the female figure, but also that of the small sculpted beard as well as the jagged line running along the top of the skull of the mask, completing to underline the meticulousness shown by the Baoulé craftsmen.
