Object description :

"Pair Of Rare Large Nineteenth Century Vases"
Description:
Chiseled gilded bronze, porcelain.
Each of these mounted objects consist of a Japanese Satsuma vase and a bronze mount.
The ovoid vase is crowned with a neck in the shape of radiating petals and ribs. It is decorated with birds, flowering branches on a pink background. The handles are in the purest neo Gothic style, dragons and interlacing, of excellent quality.
The square base is stepped. It is the typical creation of a luxury item sold by the Parisian department stores of the second half of the 19th century. Buyers working for these stores went to Asian countries and brought back ceramics that bronzers mounted in vases, candelabras, centerpieces...
This work being inspired by that of the haberdashers of the Ancien Régime. Here, the mix of genres is daring, we are at the time of the glory of Violet Le Duc, whose decorative vocabulary we find for the dragon handles. these vases adorned a bourgeois interior in one of the Haussmann buildings that had just been built.
These unconventional vases are particularly unusual, perhaps they were ordered, indeed the mixture of neo Gothic and a very refined Satsuma is a rarity, but it "works aesthetically", also carried by a very good quality of work as much for the vase than for the bronze.
In view of the great universal exhibitions of that time, manufacturers competed in technical prowess and audacity.
Creating a genre that will later be called: “The Second Spectacular Empire”. Our vases are completely in the vein of these works.
