"Gabriel Gugès Oil On Cardboard Canvas Orientalist Portrait In Tiznit (morocco) Dated 1938"
Orientalist scene presenting a woman in a living room, in Tiznit in Morocco. This portrait of a woman in a Moroccan interior evokes the work of Matisse, in his period in Nice, for the treatment of color, the way in which the subjects and the motifs intertwine with the specific pictoriality of the work. The work is signed Gabriel Gugès (1903-1996) and dated 1938. Born in Algeria, Gabriel Gugès was received at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers before completing his training at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. He is distinguished throughout his life as a student and then as an artist and professor at the Beaux-Arts in Algiers, exhibits at the salon of French artists, receives official commissions, etc. Until the 1980s, he traveled around the Mediterranean and represented landscapes and scenes of life. He is recognized for his treatment of color, borrowed from divisionism, work on textures and materials. It is a very beautiful work. Dimensions: 45 cm high, 37 cm wide (excluding frame).
