"Hermann-paul, Rooster (le Coq), Xylography (# Expressionism Nabis Camargue Woodblock Print)"
Hermann-Paul, René Georges Hermann Paul dit, (1864 - 1940): French engraver, illustrator and painter. Trained at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian, in his youth he produced numerous drawings for the illustrated press (L'Assiette au beurre, etc.) and was then close to the Nabis. Hermann-Paul will be one of the main illustrators of literary classics (Don Quixote…) during the interwar period. Living in Paris, he will settle at the end of his life in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (he will create the Cross of Camargue in 1924). Although his beginnings were marked by the art of the Belle Époque, his style evolved towards Expressionism, which found its full expression in the artist's xylographies (wood engraving), as shown by this rooster.
