LUCIEN POTRONAT was a French painter (1889-1974) with a style far ahead of his time. Born in Lyon in 1889 where he studied art, before settling in Paris. He began to exhibit and at the end of the First World War he was one of the exhibitors at the Paris Salon, where he sometimes used the pseudonym of Jacques Warner. From the late 1930s he lived and worked on the Côte d'Azur, fascinated by the light and warmth of the region. His subject is usually coastal landscapes with white villas, bougainvillea and boats on the Mediterranean Sea. The tartane is a characteristic sailing boat of the Mediterranean. The name would have for origin the Arabic word taridah meaning "vessel". Used for all purposes, the tartane sailed everywhere and more generally in the western basin. A popular freight carrier, it only disappeared in the first quarter of the 20th century.
