Auguste Toulmouche was one of the most famous painters of the Second Empire in France. He devoted himself to genre scenes, interiors and social life, without neglecting female portraits, which made his reputation. His paintings representing elegant young women were very successful.
Our painting is part of this approach, but offers a more mysterious vision of the woman of his time. With exquisite refinement, the subject seems to wonder, leaving time suspended. At a time of great technical advances, of coquetry and large animated scenes, our painting, confidential by its size, is very delicate.
