"Ascanio, Florentine Carver From XVI S Friend Of Cellini By Jean Fauvelet, Man Portrait XIX"
Replica or recovery of the painting “Ascanio. 16th century Florentine engraver, pupil and friend of Benvenuto Cellini” By the painter Jean Fauvelet (1819-1883) whose original, exhibited today in Orsay, was purchased by the National Museums in 1850 to be exhibited at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris from 1851 to 1920 then at the Senate and at the Museum of Fine Arts in Orléans before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay where it is exhibited today. This replica with the same dimensions as the Orsay painting was probably commissioned from the artist by a collector who wanted a replica or a study for the final painting. This romantic composition of an aesthete posing with a collection of antiques: Greek capital, bust of Hermes on the ground, Venus at her toilette, Pan as a monk, Attic ceramic bowl with red figures on the ground... shows Ascanio as lost in his thoughts on ancient art ...
