Mafresh (trunk) open Iranian shahsavan, wool, 1960. Very good condition.

Beautiful shahsavan consisting in the central part made in soumak, of a band motif inserting zoomorphs of peacocks, spiders and göls (flowers). On either side of the soumak, kilims with red and black stripes were originally the underside of the satchel. Note: an asymmetry in the realization.
The mafresh, also called farmash, is a large bag used when moving the group, which had the function of a trunk. It was used to store clothes, blankets (djajims) but also crockery and kitchen utensils. In anticipation of her wedding, the shahsavan girl made a pair of mafreshs. One for clothes, the other for blankets, etc.
The territory of the shahsavans lies south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Made up of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik and Caucasian ethnicities, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629). Shahsavan means "those who love the Shah"
