"Sedan Chair"
"Palanquin" sedan chair in richly carved wood decorated with characters, flowers, dragons. Epoque XIX° century A sedan chair was a cabin fitted with stretchers and carried by men, used to move individually. Unlike the litters of the Romans or men of the Middle Ages where the passenger was lying down, it offers a seat that allows you to travel in a seated position and limits the number of carriers. A handy and compact means of urban transport, the sedan chair was widely used by “people of quality” in Europe from the 16th to the 18th century. On other continents, it presents itself under somewhat different aspects; in Asia, in particular, the sedan chair can take many forms, the most characteristic of which is undoubtedly the palanquin.
