Jean Benner - Portrait Of A Young Italian Woman - Capri - 1878.
Our portrait represents a young girl from Capri, the island in the Bay of Naples where Jean Benner regularly stays. This work is typical of the Italian productions of the French painter. The background is delicately prepared, in the manner of the fonds d'or, but using layers of different colors. The profile stands out clearly, in a play of shadows and subtle light.
An artist of Alsatian origin, Benner discovered Capri in 1866; there he meets Margherita Pagano, the daughter of his host who will soon become his wife.
Close friend of JJ. Henner, Benner is well represented in the collections of French museums, from Le Havre to Pau, and from Mulhouse to Nantes. We remember in particular his famous Salomé from the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes, where another portrait of a young girl dating from a stay in Capri is also kept.
