"Mask - Kanak / New Caledonia"
The Kanak people are an indigenous Melanesian people from New Caledonia. The Kanak mask is an integral part of the ceremonial costumes which covers almost the entire body of the wearer, leaving only the arms and the lower part of the legs visible. Consisting of a face carved in wood, to which, as for this example, care was taken to open the mouth to allow its wearer to see during the various ceremonies in which they were used. Their use disappeared at the beginning of colonization and their meaning still remains rather vague. With their prominent nose and their eyes without pupils, these masks of great severity are made to impress.
