Mustard Pot, Antwerp 1765, Joseph Van Der Borcht, Sterling Silver flag

Object description :

"Mustard Pot, Antwerp 1765, Joseph Van Der Borcht, Sterling Silver"
Very beautiful  and large mustard pot from the Louis XV period in embossed solid silver and struck with the hallmark of the master goldsmith of Joseph VanDer Borcht (a tower of a fortified castle) and the date hallmark of the guild of Antwerp goldsmiths for the year 1765. It is delicately engraved with typical Regency motifs on the eight sides of its baluster-shaped body. The lid is topped with a fretel in "exploded seed". Our mustard pot is still imbued with the Regency style which gave birth to this type of abundantly engraved objects, often delivered in pairs (a mustard pot and a caster) from 1720-30. Almost all the towns of the former Austrian Netherlands and northern France had a production of this type of object. The Antwerp examples are among the rarest on the art market. Our mustard pot stands 20cm tall and weighs a generous 345 grams.
