He won the first Prix de Rome for engraving in 1847. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1857. During a stay in Rome, he copied the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in watercolor. Most of these watercolors were bequeathed to the Louvre Museum by President Thiers.
