"18th Quadrille Game Box Attributed To"
Rare box from the 18th century for a quadrille game, work in Martin varnish decorated with landscapes in the style of Pillement. This box contains 4 ivory boxes, tokens; the top of the boxes is decorated with landscapes, flowers, sayings...the bottom is decorated with animals. Work attributed to "Mariaval" the young craftsman tablemaker Mariaval seems to have specialized in the manufacture of quadrille games. The inspiration used for the decor comes from engravings, characters from the Comedia del Arte. The work of the engraved ivory and mother-of-pearl is very precise and perfectly mastered. You can find a set in the same spirit of lower quality because the boxes are made of cardboard (here ivory boxes) at the Antoine Lécuyer museum
