"Bas Relief By Justin Mathieu"
Bas-relief in oval-shaped silver metal made around 1850 by Justin Mathieu (1796-1864). It represents Saint-Louis on horseback wearing the crown of thorns at the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. This representation abounds in details: Around Saint Louis soldiers are present but also ecclesiastics; in the background the transport of the relic is well guarded in the middle of the crowd which presses and at the very bottom is the Sainte Chapelle. Sculptor Justin Mathieu specialized in reliefs of historical and religious subjects. Our play is an interesting example. This artist exhibited a lot in the Parisian Salons between 1846 and 1864. 11.5 X 16.5cm with wooden frame: 13.5 X 18cm Good condition (1 slot at the bottom of the frame)
