Biography
Born in Ancona, Corrado Cagli was an outstanding artist, representative of a new art, in the first half of the 20th century. He and promising artists Giuseppe Capogrossi and Emanuele Cavalli became known as the new Roman school of painting. In his early years, he produced famous murals and experimented with neo-Cubist and metaphysical painting.
In 1946 he won the Guggenheim prize.
Some of his first exhibitions in Italy were at the Galleria d'arte in Rome and at the 1936 Milan Triennale. Here Cagli presented the Battaglia di san Martino, which has been in the Uffizi since 1983.
Cagli also exhibited in New York at the Comet Gallery in the late 1930s. He returned to New York during World War II, which caused him to flee Europe. He later became a U.S. citizen, fighting for the United States. The experience of Nazi concentration camps inspired his later work.
After the end of the war, Cagli returned to Rome, his artistic homeland, and here experimented with his informal works.
