Pierre-Philippe Thomire, Pair of neoclassical candelabra, France, First quarter of the 19th century.
Gilded bronze
h. cm. 52
The two candelabra are made up of an amphora-shaped structure, decorated with acanthus and palm leaf friezes of classical inspiration; on the front of the vases two figures, one female, dressed in the Greek style, and one male, semi-nude; a large bird of prey clings to his ankle: the eagle, symbol of Zeus, identifies the ephebe with Ganymede. The square base is also decorated with decorative plant motifs, signed at the bottom "Thomire à Paris" by the bronze worker Pierre-Philippe Thomire.
