The two front legs are carved in the upper part of a winged lion and they end in lion paws just like the rear legs. The hemicycle-shaped seat upholstered in leather and featuring two sculpted palmettes on the front recalls the antefixes commonly used in Greek and Roman architecture. From these two palmettes without follow the armrest consoles sculpted in the upper part of an eagle's head. The backrest, also in the shape of a semicircle, is sculpted on each side with a large Greek motif on a gilded background.
-Italian work around 1870. In very good condition, noteworthy old restorations under the seat.
-The curved shape of the armchair as well as the use of motifs such as antefixes, lion's heads or Greek are typical of neoclassical furniture inspired by Greek antiquity, brought back into vogue in the 19th century thanks to numerous trips to Greece, of artists, historians and archaeologists. Many examples of Neo-Greek furniture are present in the paintings of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres or Gustave Boulanger in the second half of the 19th century.
