COMMEMORATING THE BIRTH OF THE DUKE OF NORMANDY
Étrennes historiques et galantes des François.
Paris, chez Jubert Doreur rue St Jacques, w.d. [circa 1785].
Format in-18, charming period binding in ivory silk adorned with a frame embroidered with gold threads, spangles and sequins, in the center a composition fixed under glass of spangles of various colors in an oval silver frame: the one on the front cover features a cradle supported by two dolphins from which seem to emerge three heads (Madame Royale, the First Dauphin and the Duke of Normandy, future Louis XVII) and which holds a cross of the Holy Spirit, all under a canopy with two medallions evoking Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette; the other on the second cover shows a love trophy in polychrome spangles, with two birds symbolizing the happiness and fertility of the royal couple.
The pink silk lining, the first accommodating a small mercury mirror, the second arranged in bellows, golden edges.
Mention in pink ink under the composition of the first cover: "La France / satisfied".
Title-frontispiece and 12 etched figures, all colored at the time.
Good general condition, traces of humidity in the bellows.
