Catlinite
H. 8.1 ; Length: 15.8 cm
The pipe bowl is made of L-shaped catlinite with a slightly flared chimney and a slightly darker patina.
The pipe is linked to a ritual practice. Smoking the pipe could be an occasion to commemorate an event, inaugurate a facility or celebrate an important event.
It is said that the smoke went up to heaven where the Great Creator is. The calumets were kept in long skin bags decorated with quill or beading.
