Very large fossil stone carved sculpture (presumed origin from the Sète region, according to the family tradition since early 20th cty)
Powerful Virgin with child statue.
The archaic & primitive aspect of the statue is reinforced by a massive and popular sculpture, and proportions also surprising, in particular of the oversized hands and face of the virgin, while its global size seems shortened artificially and deliberately.
Difficult dating, in the medieval style, but perhaps later (itdoesn't look me in any case to be later than 17th century)
Very nice patina.
Very good condition; please note the apocryphal engraving of a crusader's cross on the back of the statue
Carrying hole both sides, oblique and oval shape, -irregular wear related to their regular use, used to receive wooden or iron axes to move the heavy statuary (about 4.5*4cm for one and about 4*5cm for the other). Examination of their interior attests that these holes are original.
Dimensions 82cm high, 26cm wide and 24cm deep; Weight about 65kg !
