Magnificent marine, "Three masts with the French flag by stormy night" on the coast of RAMSGATE in the south of England, opposite Boulogne sur mer on the French side.
Work full of romanticism very representative of the trends of the mid-nineteenth century.
Full of details: the characters on the boats trying to control it, a sailor who fell in the water and clings to mud, the city of Ramsgate and its ramparts...

It could be an ENGLISH SCHOOL, the canvas and the frame (original) come from the very famous House of artistic supplies WINDSOR & NEWTON LONDON (ink stamp on the back of the canvas).
