"Ferdinand De Braekeleer (1792-1883) Beautiful Oil On Wood Panel, Interior Scene"
Hello, I offer you this very beautiful and old painting from the 19th century. This is an oil on wood panel signed by Ferninand De Braeckeleer. Ferdinand de Braekeleer, known as Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder to distinguish him from his son, born February 12, 1792 and died in Antwerp May 16, 1883 (aged 91) was a Belgian painter and engraver. His palette covers the pictorial field of history painting, genre scenes and sacred art subjects. A pupil of Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he then went to Italy from 1819 to 1823. Established in Antwerp, he was recognized by his peers, thanks to his historical subjects on the eve of the Belgian revolution of 1830. His genre paintings also enjoyed success which led several European museums (in Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Paris, Haarlem, Hamburg, Oslo, Saint Petersburg) to acquire his works. Ferdinand de Braekeleer's studio has trained many Belgian painters, the most famous of whom is his son Henri de Braekeleer. Ferdinand de Braekeleer, from modest parents (Jean Ferdinand Joseph de Braekeleer (1744-1801), locksmith working in a forge, and Jeanne Bernardine Antoinette Seghers (1758-1804), became an orphan at the age of twelve. He was raised by his uncle, Arnold de Braekeleer, superior of the convent of the Minimes, until the day when the Antwerp monastery was transformed into barracks. In 1806, Ferdinand de Braekeleer took drawing lessons from the painter Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée who took him under his protection, then those of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, still under the aegis of Van Brée.Winner of the intermediate course in 1809, de Braekeleer won in 1811 the first prizes for drawing from life , picturesque perspective and anatomy In 1811, Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée created the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Antwerp, like the one that exists in Brussels. The first salon organized by the society took place in 1813. The subject of the history painting is: "the moment t where Aeneas prepares to receive on his shoulders the old Anchises, charged with the penate gods”. Among the competitors, Ferdinand de Braekeleer won the first prize, together with the sum of 800 francs and made a name for himself, even if - according to Henri Hymans - he did not produce a masterpiece. In 1815, the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts offered him, in addition, an annual salary of 2,400 francs for three years, so that he could complete his studies abroad (two and a half years in Rome and six months in Germany). However, the favor did not materialize and de Braekeleer remained in Antwerp where he exhibited five works at the 1816 Salon. These works bear witness to the progress of the young painter who competed the following year at the Ghent Salon and where he obtained the first price thanks to his Tobie restoring sight to his father. In 1819, his genre scenes garnered public favor. This painting requires cleaning to revive the colors and it will be magnificent. This artist has a strong rating and achieves good scores in the auction room. This work is in good general condition. The frame when it has, is in poor condition. The dimensions without frame are: Height 30 cm, Width 24 cm This painting is available and visible in my shop located at 57 rue Victor Hugo, 76000 Rouen Possibility of delivery (ask for a delivery quote) See you soon
