These weapons were used by the "black flags", these irregular Chinese troops who harassed the French in Tonkin throughout the second half of the 19th century
BLADE: It is a solid blade, made of steel, with a single curved edge. It is very thick at its base and gradually tapers towards the tip.
Note on one side the presence of a star-shaped punchmark in a circle, deeply marked.
The presence of a stamp mark is extremely rare on this type of weapon.
The blade is fitted into the original shaft, and the attachment is reinforced by an iron socket, slightly scalloped at its base.
Length of the blade = 38 cm, Width at the widest 6 cm, thickness at the base 1 cm
SHAFT : This is the original shaft made of local hardwood, probably a kind of teak.
An iron ring 19 cm from the base of the blade reinforces the mounting.
Multiple traces of combat and handling. The wood has a beautiful patina of use.
This fauchard is absolutely original, it was collected by a French officer stationed in Tonkin in the 19th century, it is most likely a war prize.
The seniority and authenticity are beyond doubt.
It is a historical witness of the fighting at the time of French Indochina.
The solidity and balance of this weapon show that it was designed for combat and not for guarding a palace.
