Kowalczewski studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin during three years from 1895. His work comprised mostly bronze busts and Art Nouveau sculptures with secular depictions of workers, but also warriors, archers, victorious poses, and occasionally birds. Between 1899 and 1906, he regularly exhibited his works at the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin. The artist's brother, Karl Kowalczewski (1867-1927), was also a sculptor.
