The snuff box is rectangular, concave to fit the shape of the body in a trouser or chest pocket.
It is entirely decorated with a decor of parallel lines.
The corners of the base are reinforced with small silver pellets, proof of the care and attachment that its owner gave it.
The interior is vermeil.
The box is stamped:
. Second cock for the silver 1st title of Paris, used between 1809 and 1819
. Hallmark of average guarantee of Parisian silver for the same period.
. Hallmark of a Greek woman, often misrepresented as from the revolutionary period. In reality it is a punch used between 1798 and 1838.
. Incomplete goldsmith's hallmark to identify J(?)/M/(letter not struck)/S; with a star as different
. A small punch of a cross in a circle, which I do not know.
. Control crab punch, posterior.
This concave shape combined with this simple but very attractive decor with its play of light is typical of the early 19th century. The punches make it possible to date this box from the 1st Empire or the beginning of the Restoration. This snuffbox is of high quality as evidenced by its size and weight, very high for this type of object.
