"Bronze Sculpture - Ernest Wittmann"
Bronze sculpture by Ernest Wittmann (1846-1921). Draftsman, painter and sculptor from the east of France. He lived in Nancy, attended the School of Fine Arts where he met Victor Prouvé (1858-1943) who became his guide. He was one of the founding members of the School of Nancy and exhibited in Paris from 1888. His taste for representations of Vosges peasants of high quality of execution is expressed through his terracotta works. , sandstone or bronze produced by the Mougin brothers, ceramists and sculptors from Lorraine renowned from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. The museums of Paris, Nancy, Lunéville, Toul (''a cabin in the Vosges'') and Remiremont keep some of his creations. The Charles de Bruyères museum in Remiremont has a copy identical to the work presented here: ''la paysanne''. The patina is in perfect condition but the back of the character has a square opening in its backpack of about 4 cm on the side which seems to be original without being able to determine its use (see photo). Signed at the base. End of the 19th.
