Object description :

"Eduardo Léon Garrido (1856-1949) Impressionist Portrait"
Impressionist painting from the late 19th century oil painting on mahogany panel signed lower right EL GUARRIDO (Eduardo Léon GARRIDO 1856-1949) depicting the portrait of a young elegant woman from the Belle Epoque reading leaning on an entablature decorated with a stemmed glass adorned with a small bouquet of flowers. The artist approaches the portrait here from the angle of intimacy, the work shows a good mastery in the play of shadows and lights painted by broad strokes with powerful impasto and glazes which project in the foreground a intense light, the best way to exalt the beauty and youth of the young woman, thus deploying a delicate romantic atmosphere where the posture of the subject appears above all as a meditation while the objects posed evoke the elegant refinement and the distinction of the model . Good condition, 19th century frame in gilded wood, dimensions: 51 cm X 44 cm / saw 34 cm X 26 cm. Eduardo León Garrido, is a French painter, of Spanish origin born in Madrid in 1856. He enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid and met Vicente Palmaroli González, his teacher, whom he admired and considered his mentor. In 1875, aged only nineteen, Eduardo-Leon Garrido left his hometown to continue his studies in Paris thanks to a scholarship offered by the city of Madrid. Quickly, the talent of the young painter is identified by the famous art dealer Adolphe Goupil. Garrido worked for him for a few years, which enabled him to exhibit his paintings at the Salon des Artistes français. In 1888 he moved to La Varenne where he married one of his models: Léonie Beck. Eduardo-Leon Garrido mainly painted portraits like the Young Woman in a Flowered Hat and scenes in the style of the 18th century, this new trend may have been initiated by Edmond and Jules de Goncourt who wrote in 1881 L' 18th century art. To suit the fluctuating demands of the art market, Garrido complied with this aesthetic. The work El pintor y su modelo is a perfect example. The Madrid painter thus conquered all of Europe and exhibited in the greatest European artistic capitals such as Munich, Paris and London. Edouardo León Garrido, will spend the last ten years of his life in Caen with his son Louis-Édouard Garrido, himself a painter. A collection of his works and that of his son can be seen at the Charles Léandre museum located in Normandy.
