"Japanese 6-panel Screen - Genpei War"
Ink, colors and gold on paper with gofun (calcified crushed shell) surrounded by a border of silk brocade and framed in black lacquered wood.
It depicts a famous 12th century war scene between the Minamoto and Taira clans.
On the second and third panels, from the right, probably Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159-1189) mounted on his black horse Tayuguro leading his cavalry on their epic charge into the Hiyodori Gorge to attack the Taira forces encamped by the sea at Ichi no Tani (spring 1184); Unsigned.
