"Afchar Rug"
Afchar rug in decorative wool 180x130 in very good condition. "Around the city of Kerman in southeastern Iran live the semi-nomads of the Afshar tribe. Many centuries ago these nomads lived in northwestern Iran, but a branch of the tribe was forced to move to the present region, where the manufacture of carpets became an important economic sector. These carpets have red and blue shades and most of them bear geometric patterns. The most common pattern is composed of a large central field with one or more square medallions. This is thought to symbolize the skin of an animal which would be stretched before being dressed. Also found today is the medallion motif and what is typical of Afshar rugs is that they are relatively wide compared to their length. In the nearby town of Shahr Babak, similar rugs are woven with a higher knot density and with more detailed patterns. are also marketed under the name Sirdjan."
