"Georges Jacob - Office Armchair In Mahogany From The Directoire Period - Stamped - Horsehair Cover"
Office armchair in mahogany and mahogany veneer, model with molded gadrooned legs, arm supports with columns, front legs in Etruscan saber and straight molded backrest. Directoire period, 1790s. It bears the stamp G.IACOB for Georges Jacob under the seat. Georges Jacob was one of the greatest chair carpenters of the 18th century, with immense success during his lifetime, particularly as a supplier to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. The seats from the workshop of Georges Jacob are recognizable, in particular, by the very high quality of their execution, the always perfect proportions. Our seat is typical of the so-called Etruscan style, very fashionable at the end of the 18th century and directly inspired by the excavations of Greco-Roman antiquity, drawn by the painter David. Georges Jacob, at the forefront of fashion, was one of the initiators of this new style by creating the first so-called English mahogany chairs for the Count of Provence at Versailles. He launched the Etruscan style by designing the Etruscan furniture in carved mahogany, delivered in 1788 for the Château de Rambouillet dairy. In a very pure style, this armchair is a prototype of the new style, a natural evolution of the Louis XVI style, precursor of what would later become the Empire style, the work of a great designer of the 18th century. Everything is thought out in the proportions, patterns, decorative elements, nothing has been left to chance. The curve of the Etruscan forefeet is particularly elegant. For this beautiful office chair, we offered the level of restoration it deserves: new varnished mahogany. Hand-stitched tableau trim and hand-woven horsehair blanket. This fabric of great luxury is no longer manufactured today by a single company in France and in the world. Excellent condition, old restorations. Beautiful mahogany, the varnish has been redone in the traditional way. Width: 57.5cm Height: 87cm Seat height: 39.5cm
