Object description :

"Georges Pomerat (1870-1948) Citadel Of Fos Sur Mer"
A thick and vigorous material, a harmony of colors and a solid and sober design for this pretty oil on canvas by the Provençal painter Georges Pomerat. The work in excellent condition is offered in a gilded frame from the thirties which measures 55 cm by 70 cm and 50 cm by 65 cm for the canvas alone. It represents the perched and typical village of Fos sur Mer around the Etang de Berre, at the gates of the Camargue, between Arles and Marseille. Old buildings, characters and a plantation of olive trees enrich this work full of charm, life and light. It is signed and dated (19)23 lower right. Born in Ardèche in 1870, Georges Pomerat settled in Marseilles at the beginning of the 20th century where he shared a studio in the Old Quarters, behind La Bourse, with his close friend Jean Guindon. In this workshop meet all the artists of Marseille Bohemia, Louis Audibert, Edmond Astruc, Pierre and Pascal Ambrogiani, Toussaint d'Orcino, Antoine Ferrari, FM Berthet, JF Canepa, Antoine Serra, Pierre Marseille, François Diana etc. and many others. He was successful in the 1920s and 1930s. He then left to settle in Arles in the 1940s where without money, material help or food, he died in hospital in 1948.
