BIOGRAPHY:
Carl Wilhelm Wallgren known as VILLE VALLGREN born in 1855 in PORVOO died in HELSINKI in 1940 is a renowned sculptor of French nationality of Finnish origin.
At twenty-two, he left the Grand Duchy of Finland for Paris and remained there for thirty-six years.
He joined the Symbolists and was distinguished at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
Recognized by critics in particular during the salons of the Rose-Croix in 1892 and the Champ de Mars in 1893.
He was awarded the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
Installed in his Paris studio at 233 bis rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, he created the famous statue of the female nude Havis Amanda, which today adorns the fountain in the Place du Marché and has become an emblem of Helsinki.
He took as living models two 19-year-old girls, Marcelle Delquin and Léonie Tavier, inspired by the feminine type of the young Parisian, breathing freedom and gaiety, such as one could see on the grand boulevards in Paris.
