Several pieces of information allow us to identify the persons:
- the handwritten label glued to the back of the portrait of Monsieur specifies that we are dealing with Baron von Tschudy, General-lieutenant in the service of Naples, commander of the guard of the King (Oberst des K. Garde) and Chamberlain of His Majesty the King (Kammerherr SK Majestät) [Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies].
- the letter, placed in front of Madame, bears the address To Madame la Baronne d'Arregger, born Baroness of Tschudi
To our knowledge, the only Baroness d'Arregger born of Tschudi is Maria Franziska Tschudi (1759-1798), married in 1779 to Urs Josef Ludwig Ferdinand Arregger (1748-1814).
Maria was the daughter of Josef Anton Tschudi (1703-1770) and Maria Anna Gallati (1717-1784), who are therefore most likely the two subjects depicted in these canvases.
Josef Anton having died in 1770, we would be dealing here with a posthumous portrait. It is possible that the Baroness of Tschudi wished to offer her youngest daughter, married in 1779, a portrait of her parents. This would explain this unusual address on the envelope, with mention of parentage.
