Biography:
Auguste Joseph Clergé, born in Troyes on January 20, 1891 and died in Paris on September 2, 1963, is a painter, lithographer, illustrator, theater designer, watercolourist, pastel painter, painter of theater sets and costumes.
Son of a taxidermist, he began his career as a trapeze artist then a clown in a circus before settling in 1910 in Paris where he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts where he was a pupil of Fernand Cormon.
Wounded and demobilized in 1916, he made himself known in Montparnasse where he frequented, among others, Chaïm Soutine, Kees Van Dongen, Maurice Utrillo and Maurice Le Scouezec and where he founded the company of professional painters and sculptors.
Through his second wife, an actress in the Pitoëff troupe, he himself became an actor and also painted theater sets (1920-1932).
In 1928, in Paris, he founded the populist salon. Member of the Salon des Indépendants, he exhibits at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne listed in the Bénezit
