"Statuette - Senofou / Ivory Coast"
One of the first tribes to occupy present-day Côte d'Ivoire were members of the Sénoufo ethnic group, based in the region near the country's third largest city: Korhogo. This does not prevent us from also finding more than 2 million individuals in Mali, underlining the cultural influence of this ethnic group with a strong aesthetic identity. Note the fine execution of the head, worked with a certain softness, in particular through its crested hairstyle, plunging on the face of the face and coming to mingle with the eyebrow arch of the statue, reflecting a beautiful quality of execution. The black wood composing this sculpture recalls the deep shades of ebony and represents a striking testimony to the aesthetics of the Senoufos. The oval shape of the face ending in a point at the chin is characteristic of the aesthetic standards of Senufo statuary, as is the broad torso revealing a prominent chest.
