On this sculpture, the figure is also accompanied by a woodpecker which is carved pricking a tree trunk. In Chinese thought, it represents natural harmony and is the messenger of the health of the forest. It is also recognized as the strongest-willed animal in the animal kingdom, as it repeats its woodworking until it finds its food.
The group is mounted on a removable carved wooden base.
