Object description :

"Famous Pewter Tank By Isaac Faust - Strasbourg, Circa 1623"
Truncated conical mug with domed lid and handle depicting a female caryatid, entirely decorated in relief with three allegorical medallions, variants of those of the so-called MARS dish and symbolizing AFRICA, EUROPE and ASIA borrowed from François BRIOT and captioned: PATIENTIA , SOLERTIA, NONVI, which translates as “Patience through Strength”, alternating with grotesque masks, falling fruit, cherubs and patterns imitating the work of cut leather.
Hallmark:
City control hallmark with a small lily in a round cartridge
Hallmark of Isaac FAUST: initials IF / two grains, in a small round cartridge.
Height: 7 inches.
STRASBOURG, around 1623.

Comment:
Isaac FAUST was received master in 1623. The differences between this tankard and that of François BRIOT de Montbéliard are limited to a few small details of ornamentation. When BRIOT died, FAUST was ten years old, this suggests that they did not meet, but it is very plausible that Isaac FAUST was able, having become a master, to obtain his molds and modify certain details.

Condition of conservation:
Good general condition The replacement of the top of the lid and the hinge pin as well as a small cast iron defects near the tab are however reported. Very slight wear on the reliefs
