"Large Fireback Dated 1583 With The Arms Of Mauclerc And Deu (119x96 Cm)"
Epreuve of a fireback dated 1583, probably cast in the 19th century, in the neo-Gothic style, in perfect condition, mainly bearing five coats of arms. In the center or on the whole, in leather, a shield with the initials PB and BP entwined with a cord, three stars and a flowered heart complete the coat of arms surmounted by a cherub's head. On either side, in the upper part two coats of arms of the Mauclerc family, with the particularity of a broken chevron and in the lower part two coats of arms of the Deu family. Three heads of cherubs, two heads of lions and a rectangular geometric pattern made with a cord complete its ornamentation. This plate is framed by a corded molding. Its weight is 271 kg. The Mauclerc family or Maucler, Manclerc, Mauclere. Originally from Vitry le François and settled in Châlons, this family counted elected officials, ecclesiastics and people of the robe. Edmond de Mauclerc, branch of Vitry le François in the Marne, was principal squire and first hero-at-arms of the Duke of Lorraine and Calabria on 30/10/1544. Jean 2 de Mauclerc, 1558-1625, Châlons-en-Champagne, Ordinary and Provincial Controller of Artillery and Ammunition in Champagne and Brie. Another branch established in Nogent sur Seine in Aube is known with Etienne Mauclerc, 1577-1617, master sergeant of waters and forests of this city. An alliance is known with the family of Deu, by the union of Françoise de Mauclerc with Pierre Deu, on January 22, 1652 in Châlons in Champagne. Many variants of the primitive coat of arms are listed in the Hozier armorial for the branches of Châlons en Champagne and Nogent sur Seine. The coat of arms bearing a chevron as a break could not be attributed. Arms: Azure with a bolt of gold or silver in fess accompanied by three clovers of gold or silver. Maucler's bibliography: - Johannes Baptist Rietstap, Armorial Général, 1861, page 688. - Armorial Général de France, 1711, Charles d'Hozier, Xth volume, Champagne, Generality of Châlons, page 387. The Deu family was born in the town from Châlons, in Champagne, where it has been known since the 14th century. The stock was divided into two main branches, that of the lords of Vieux-Dampierre (senior branch) and that of the lords of Perthes, Mesnil, Montigny and Marson (younger branch). The coat of arms on our plaque is that of the cadet branch. Arms: Or a chevron Azure charged on the point with a mullet Or and accompanied in chief by two laurel wreaths Vert and in base by a paw of a griffin Sable. Chaix d'Est-Ange, volume 14, pages 32 to 35: "A genealogical table kept in the Blue Files gives the parentage since the year 1598, the date on which the property dependent on the succession of noble persons master Pierre Deu, living doctor of medicine, and Marie de Paris were divided between their children, noble man master Nicolas Deu, doctor of medicine, residing in Chalons, Charles Deu, licentiate in laws, lawyer for the King at Sainte-Menehould, Pierre Deu, apothecary merchant, etc. The second of these sons, Charles, continued the line. » Two identical plates are listed in the Palissy database, one located at the Le Bisson manor in Vimoutiers in the Orne, Ref: IVR25_19926100433 and the other located in Sérent in the Morbihan, Ref: IM56001780. Even more interesting in the general inventory of the Grand Est cultural heritage, a plate (n°9), under the reference IM88030201, coming from Gendreville in the Vosges, bears the coat of arms in the center of our plate, with the initials PB/BP, accompanied fleur-de-lys, two crosses of Lorraine and a carbuncle. It is therefore very likely that this coat of arms comes from Lorraine, as the iconography of these plates suggests. View the photo. Element that calls out: the monogamist in the center of the shield strangely resembles that of the bookseller printers from 1493 to 1515 of Pierre Mareschal and Barnabé Chaussart located in Lyon. Bibliographic reference: Cover of an incunabula dated 1500, edition of Pierre Mareschal and Barnabé Chaussart and a drawing listed in the encyclopedic dictionary of marks and monograms, numbers, initial letters, figurative signs, etc…Volume 2, Oscar-Edmond Ris- Paquot, 1893.
