"Gilt Bronze Clock, Charles X Period - Early 19th Century"
Tiered rectangular pendulum, with wire movement, in gilded bronze and brown patina. It features an important sculpture of young Paris, seated on a rock, carrying a cane and holding out an apple. In mythology, Paris, then a herdsman on Mount Ida, meets the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite who are fighting over the price of beauty. The latter, winner, is given a golden apple by the shepherd as a trophy. The bronze dial, with two hands with inscriptions in Roman numerals, is surrounded by a frieze of flowers. The base is delicately carved in relief with a scepter and a spear crossing three intertwined garlands. The set rests on four feet decorated with floral scrolls. This clock, which has been advancing minute by minute for more than 200 years, will appeal for its elegance and the contrast of its patinas. ******** Period: Early 19th century Pendulum in excellent condition.
