Ludwig Hohlwein (1874 in Wiesbaden - 1949 in Berchtesgaden) was one of the leading German-modernist poster artists at the time ca. 1900-1910. He was trained and practiced as an architect until 1906, when he switched to poster design. Hohlwein's adaptations of photographic images were based on a deep and intuitive understanding of graphic principles. His creative use of color and architectural compositions dispels any suggestion that he uses photos as a substitute for creative design.
