Ladies at Tea, circa 1910 by WILLIAM CHARLES PENN (BRITISH 1877-1968) Large 1910 English interior portrait of ladies drinking tea in a dining room, oil on canvas by William Charles Penn. Excellent quality vintage interior scene in good condition and a major example of Penn's work. Some blooms in the face of the character on the left that will clean up easily. Framed. Provenance: Sothebys, May 11, 1988, lot 13, London Dimensions: 38" x 32" framed approximately William Charles Penn 1877-1968 RP, ROI, R.Cam.A. William Charles Penn was an influential painter and teacher at the Liverpool School of Art from 1911 until after the Second World War. Born in London, he studied at the Lambeth and City and Guilds Schools of Art from 1895, subsequently winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy from 1900 to 1905. Penn then studied at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1908 and l following year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As well as being a member of the Sandon Studios Society and the Liverpool Academy, he was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters from 1908 and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1952, as well as the Royal Cambrian Academy. He showed 38 works at the Royal Academy, with many more at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and for many years at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions. Serving with the 57th Division in France during World War I, he was awarded the Military Cross in 1918. In recent years Penn moved north from Liverpool with his family to Brampton, Cumbria, where he lived until on his death in 1968. More than 50 of Penn's paintings are held in national public collections of British art, including the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, University College London, the Williamson Art Gallery and the University of Liverpool .
