"Important Bronze "
Bronze Diane de Gabies with brown patina on marble base signed on the terrace Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892). Barbedienne is known for its eponymous foundry founded in 1838 with Achille Colas (1795-1859), inventor of the process of mechanical reduction of sculptures, whose stamp is also present. This proof is a reproduction of an ancient work by the sculptor Praxiteles (-395 BC). It depicts Diana of Gabies, usually identified as Artemis, virgin goddess of hunting and wilderness. With her right hand, this draped young woman, in a standing position near a trunk, is about to staple, using a fibula, the other side of her chiton. Her wavy hair is kept in a bun. It rests on a stepped and molded pedestal in black marble. If it was often copied, the original work is faithfully reproduced here, this bronze will undoubtedly appeal to amateurs and art collectors.
