Small Chinese Sideboard, 19th Century

If in the 19th century the fashion for objects and furniture from Asia did not weaken and even experienced a particular revival at the end of the century, the so-called "Chinese" provenances are not as fine as what they import! Widely referred to as "Chinese", small furniture or decorative objects made in workshops in China or Japan to meet European demand are, sometimes, small marvels. This small sideboard is an example of this with its chinoiserie decorations but above all - and this is rarer - keyholes and feigned hinges in gilded lacquer, like an Asian reinterpretation of gilded bronze. And what about those bouquets on the sides? They are certainly not far from the generous inlaid bouquets of Pierre Gole!
This charming little piece of furniture opens onto storage units that are also not those that we are used to find in France during the reign of Napoleon III or after! Four lockers, arranged in a square, that is very curious to the European’s eyes, not to mention these feet like beehives. The shelf further reinforces the Western taste with its turned wood and delicate elevation.
Anyway, this small sideboard in very good condition is not ordinary and stands out nicely from the chinoiseries to which the 19th century has accustomed us.
