"Paul Lemasson (1897-1971), Oil On Wood "the Barrel Maker", Middle Of XXth Century"
"Le Tonnelier": oil on wood signed Paul LEMASSON lower right. Very beautiful lively and colorful village scene, with a slightly naive style. In the foreground on the right, barrels are loaded into a cart in front of the barrel maker's workshop. On the left, a game of boules takes place in the shade of the trees. In the center, a family and children having fun. In the middle of the stage, the Café des Amis with its regulars and the grocery store, then a little further down the village church with its procession of characters going to the office. In the background, a lake, then the countryside and the hills against a cloudy sky. The work takes place in a richly carved gilded wooden frame. A plate bearing the mention "P. LEMASSON" is present on the awning. At the back of the painting a label with the name of the painting: "Le Tonnelier". Mid-twentieth century. Paul LEMASSON (1897-1971) particularly excelled in the painting of living pictures populated by small characters, as in the paintings of the Flemish masters, representing village scenes and daily life.
