The Houses Of The Port Of Villefranche Sur Mer Oil On Canvas By Henri Marchal - 1929

Superb view of Villefranche from the sea made in 1929 by Henri Marchal. The painting is signed and dated lower right, titled on the back.  On its original canvas and with its period frame. It is in good condition, some cracks but no restorations needed. Henri Marchal was born in Nancy in 1878. Pupil of Larcher at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and of Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was admitted to the Salon of French Artists at the age of 18. He obtained a Silver Medal in 1906 and his first Gold Medal in 1926. The influence of Marquet is perceptible in his landscapes and in particular this one. The artist was a teacher and then director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. The painting is visible at the gallery.
