"2 L Capacity Measure Of The Decimal Metric System, In Pewter. 1825-1830."
Cylindrical molded body, pinched spout, overflowing lid. Hallmark of master potter: GAILLARD in ROUEN. Official hallmark of Weights and Measures, with the fleur-de-lis for the period 1825-1830. A few annual control hallmarks indicate its use in a drinking establishment or a grocery store. The metric system established in 1793 was formalized in 1801. Its application came up against the conservatism and other customary habits of the many different measuring capacities of the old provinces. It was only made compulsory for the whole of France in 1840. This is why this measure is a rarity. Height at the lid: 25 cm. Diameter at the belly: 11.5 cm. Period: First quarter of the 19th century. Very good condition. Free shipping by COLISSIMO for metropolitan France.
